Mexican auto insurance does not cover your personal belongings while in Mexico, but your US or Canadian homeowners insurance might!
So you are packing your vehicle for your road trip to Mexico, and you start realizing there is a lot of value in your personal belongings.
What happens if someone steals all of my stuff while I am in Mexico?
I bought Mexican auto insurance, but does my Mexican auto insurance cover the stuff inside my car?
Unfortunately, auto insurance, whether US or Mexican auto insurance, never covers your personal belongings.
But if you have US or Canadian home insurance, there is a very good chance that your home insurance covers your personal belongings while traveling abroad.
If you are concerned about having insurance coverage for your personal belongings while traveling in Mexico, we highly recommend contacting your US home insurance agent to confirm whether your stuff is covered or not. If so, it is a good idea to document all of your belongings that you are taking with you to Mexico, and take photos and put all of the receipts in a file. Your US home insurance agent can advise you of the exact protocol to follow for documenting your belongings.
Burglaries and vehicle thefts do happen in Mexico. While our Mexican auto insurance will cover your vehicle if it is stolen, and our extended coverage Mexican insurance policies will cover vandalism to your your vehicle, no Mexican auto insurance will reimburse you for your cameras, clothes, computers, jewelry, and other personal belongings.
While packing for your trip to Mexico, we recommend that you read our information pages on what items your are allowed to bring to Mexico. This will help ensure that you don't end up donating any of your stuff to the Mexican customs agents!
