It appears that people from the US and Canada are finally feeling safe about driving to Mexico.
Based on our Mexican auto insurance sales for November and December 2009, it seems that people have finally decided to start driving to Mexico again.
As with many industries, 2009 has not been a stellar year for the Mexican 'tourist' auto insurance industry. A perfect storm of negative factors made 2009 one of the slowest years for Mexican auto insurance in recent history.
Below are the main factors that put a damper on Mexico road trips in 2009
- The economy and high gas prices caused many people to delay their plans for a Mexico road trip. More people stayed home and worked instead of going on vacation in Mexico.
- The media started pounding the drum about drug gang violence in Mexico. Although almost none of the victims of violence in Mexico were tourists, the media blitz about the drug gang violence did not inspire many US and Canadian citizens to vacation in Mexico.
- In June 2009, the US started enforcing the passport requirements for land travel to and from Mexico. Air travel had required passports for a few years, but this was new for land travel. This passport requirement further limited the amount of people who were driving to Mexico - especially the spontaneous weekend warrior travelers who did not have passports.
- When things couldn't get much worse - SWINE FLU - blew up on the news, and everyone pointed to Mexico as the source. Even though there have been more swine flu cases in California than in Baja, Mexico was stigmatized in the media. Not many people felt like driving to Mexico while the media was telling them that they would possibly die from the swine flu!
But finally, reality seems to be coming to the surface for many people who love to travel to Mexico. The economy has not gone completely off a cliff, no tourists have been killed in drug gang violence, and the swine flu seems to not be as dangerous as everyone thought (and you are more likely to get swine flu in the US or Canada). So it seems that people who treasure their vacation time in Mexico are finally feeling comfortable about returning for a quality road trip.
We agree, 2009 has been a stressful year, so a relaxing road trip to Baja or anywhere in Mexico sounds like a great way to finish 2009 - or get off to a good start for 2010! It's amazing how all of the stresses of the world melt away with each passing mile on the open roads south of the border. Enjoy!
P.S. It's even more relaxing when you know you have the highest quality Mexican auto insurance from Adventure Mexican Insurance Services!
