The difference between a Mexico insurance company and an insurance agency who sells Mexico insurance
Some of our customers are confused about what role a Mexico insurance company plays and the role that a Mexican insurance agent plays in the 'tourist' Mexican auto insurance industry. Because we receive a number of questions about this topic, we decided to write a quick article to help our customers understand how the Mexican auto insurance industry works in regards to 'tourist' Mexican auto insurance - meaning Mexican auto insurance for US and Canadian vehicles that drive across the border into the country of Mexico.
US and Canadian insurance is not valid or recognized in Mexico
Most US and Canadian citizens who drive their vehicles to Mexico understand that their US or Canadian auto insurance does not work in Mexico. For this reason, people must purchase a 'tourist' Mexican auto insurance policy for their vehicle prior to entering the country of Mexico. This Mexican 'tourist' auto insurance must be underwritten by a Mexican insurance company. This means that the insurance company must be located in Mexico and registered as Mexico insurance company.
US insurance agents have contracts with the Mexican insurance companies to sell Mexican auto insurance to US and Canadian citizens
US and Canadian insurance law does not allow a foreign insurance company to sell directly to customers within the US or Canada, so it is necessary for 'tourist' Mexican auto insurance to be sold to customers through a US licensed insurance agent. So US based insurance brokers and insurance agents are needed to distribute Mexican 'tourist' auto insurance to customers in the US and Canada. Our company, Adventure Mexican Insurance Services, is a US based insurance brokerage that is fully licensed to sell Mexican auto insurance to customers within the US and Canada. We have contracts with four of the best Mexican insurance companies in all of Mexico, and we act as 'distributors' of their Mexican insurance products. We also act as a filter for our customers, in that we only work with Mexican insurance companies who have a solid record of financial strength and professional customer service.
So who pays my insurance claim?
The Mexican insurance company located in Mexico is responsible for paying and processing your insurance claims. However, our insurance brokerage assists our customers if they have questions about the claims process or feel the Mexican insurance company is not taking care of them fairly. Quite often we do get involved with some of the logistics of processing a claim, and we fight for our customers to make sure you are being treated fairly. If the Mexican insurance company wants us to continue to sell their insurance products, we demand that they treat our customers professionally!
To sum things up, when you purchase a Mexican auto insurance policy, you are purchasing insurance that is underwritten by an actual Mexican insurance company. However, you are purchasing that Mexican insurance policy through a licensed US insurance agent who is regulated by US insurance law.
