Up
until June 2009, US and Canadian citizens will be able to drive
in and out of Mexico using their drivers licenses as proof of
citizenship, however, a passport is the preferred form of identification!
If you have a passport, you should definitely bring it on your
trip to Mexico. If you do not have a passport, you can use your
drivers license for now, but you should get a passport to be prepared
for future rules changes.

As of June 2009, new US Homeland Security laws will
require a passport or other proof of citizenship documents in
order to cross into the US. This law will apply to US and Canadian
citizens. Please
visit the US State Department website to read more about the Western
Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
The
exact details of these laws are still being debated, but if you
plan to travel to Mexico over the next few years, you should plan
ahead and get a passport now.
