Description:
The state of Campeche is located in the western half of the
Yucatan peninsula that includes over 280 islands. The climate
throughout much of the state is warm and humid with heavy
rainfall, especially in the southwestern sector. Extensive
forests and lowlands provide the important exports of lumber
and oil for the state. Fishing is also an important economic
activity. Processing and packaging plants for fish and seafood
have become key to the local economy in recent years.
The coastline of Campeche has been important to Mexican history.
The capital city of Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen are principal
seaports of the state. Campeche was used as a base by the
Spanish explorer Francisco de Montejo for his exploits against
the Maya in 1531-1535. The coast and its numerous islands
were used as haunts for pirates for more than 200 years. Campeche
also contains many ruins of the Maya civilization.
