Description:
Colima
is a small state located in western Mexico. Almost everything
about the state reflects its two most dominant landscape features
– the sea and the sierras. The name Colima has 2 meanings
depending on the translation – either “Place conquered
by our grandparents or ancestors” or “Place dominated
by the Fire God.” The latter meaning is in reference
to the active volcano Volcan de Fuego, also known as Volcan
de Colima, which is located near the capital city of Colima.
This volcano is considered the most dangerous active volcano
in Mexico and has spawned several small eruptions since 1999.
The
capital city was founded in 1527 and still features many
historic buildings. Colima has several excellent museums.
The city is full of beautiful parks. One such park just
east of the city center, Parque Piedra Lisa, is home to
the famous “slippery stone” of Colima. Legend
has it that if you slide down the stone, you will be destined
to return to Colima city.
