The
state of Mexico, often referred to as Edomex – an abbreviation
of its Spanish name Estado de Mexico, is located in the center
of the country. It borders the national capital of Mexico
City, but the city is not considered a part of the state.
The state of Mexico has the highest population in the nation
and the majority of the people are Indian.
A large part of the state lies in the great depression of
the Mexican plateau known as the Valley of Mexico. This area
is covered by swamps, sodden meadows and several lakes. Two
mountain ranges run through the state as well.
Agriculture is the principal industry in the state of Mexico.
One of the key crops is maguey, from which pulque is made.
The production of this crop and the exportation of pulque
to Mexico City is the chief industry of this state. Lots of
cotton, wool, flour and dairy products are also heavily produced.
The state of Mexico is home to many ruins and historical sites.
The city of Tlalnepantla has two ancient pyramids as well
as the Municipal Palace. Pre-Columbian ruins can be found
in the city of Teotihuacan. Exploring this region once populated
by both the Toltecs and Aztecs will reveal numerous archaeological
treasures and breathtaking views.
