Capital:
Tepic
State Population:
895,975
Description:
The state of Nayarit is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
The name Nayarit comes from clay figurines found in the area
from pre-Columbian times. Due to numerous swamps, lagoons
and mangroves, much of the coastline remains undeveloped and
is teeming with wildlife. These coastal swamps are noted bird
refuges.
There are 2 large volcanoes in Nayarit. Ceboruco is still
an active volcano and fuels several thermal springs. Sanganguey
is an extinct volcano that offers excellent rock climbing.
The volcanic soil along with heavy rains and various elevations
lend to the cultivation of numerous agricultural crops such
as coffee, tobacco, grain, sugarcane and cotton. The wealth
of forests in Nayarit, largely unexploited in the past, is
now being rapidly developed. Mining is also an important factor
to the local economy.
