Description:
Although the state of Queretaro is geographically
one of the smallest Mexican states, its historical significance
is in Mexico's history is tremendous.
In the early 1800's, the capital city of Queretaro was where
the plans for rebellion against Spain for Mexico's independence
were created.
Later in 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was formulated
in Queretaro. The treaty ceded California, Arizona, and New
Mexico to the United States.
A few years later in the 1860's, French appointed Emperor
Maximilian made Queretaro his headquarters, and was later
executed in Queretaro by firing squad after his military defeat
to Benito Juarez's people's army.
In 1917, Queretaro was the site where the current Mexican
constitution was drafted.
Today, the city of Queretaro is a major industrial center
which manufactures many auto parts, and other mechanical equipment.
Visitors should expect some congestion and pollution in the
city, but the historical landmarks and colonial architecture
within the state are worth the visit.
