Description:
The state of Sonora is one of the most popular
driving destinations for US and Canadian visitors. The popular
beach destination Puerto
Penasco (Rocky
Point) is just a 60 mile drive from the Arizona border.
Further on down the Sonoran coast, there are a number of other
tourist friendly beach resort developments such as Guaymas
and San Carlos. The San Carlos golf courses, marina, excellent
sport fishing, and luxury accommodations attract many upscale
travelers, but there are also plenty of budget accommodations
and activities.
The interior of Sonora can be extremely hot and arid, but
modern irrigation has allowed the Sonoran desert to bloom
with agriculture. The capital of Hermosillo is located in
the center of the state. Many of the popular driving routes
to southern Mexico pass through Hermosillo, but the extreme
heat often causes tourists to keep on driving toward the southern
coast.
Sonora is also know for producing the famous Sonoran beef.
