Capital:
Villahermosa
State Population: 1,748,664
Description:
No, the state of Tabasco is not named after the
hot sauce. Tabasco is actually an indian word meaning, "damp
earth". This name is appropriate due to the state's large
network of lagoons, swamps, and humid jungles.
Tabasco is not marketed as a major tourist destination. The
state's economy is driven by industry and agriculture. Tabasco
contains some of Mexico's richest oil fields, and the the
capital Villahermosa acts as a trade route for cargo being
transported along the Rio Grijalva river.
Tabasco is also home to many Olmec artifacts. The Olmecs are
thought to be the oldest of Mexico's great civilizations.
Villahermosa has two museums dedicated to the Olmec culture.
It is wise to check with the Mexican Government Tourism Office
prior to visiting Tabasco, due to sporadic civil unrest over
the years in this region.
