Yucatan
  Capital: Merida
State Population:
1,555,733

Description:
The state of Yucatan is home to some of the most famous and impressive Maya ruins, Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Uxmal. The huge collection of pyramids, temples, and shrines at both of these locations makes for a truly awe inspiring experience.

The state of Yucatan is located in the northern center of the Yucatan peninsula. The entire peninsula is one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations - with Cancun and Cozumel being located in the neighboring state of Quintana Roo.

While in Yucatan, the traveler should certainly visit the Capital Merida. Merida was one of the first Spanish colonial cities, and the colonial architecture creates a distinctive European feel.
