State Population: 1,375,000
Description:
The
state of Zacatecas is located at the geographic heart of Mexico
in the great central plateau. The average elevation is 7700
feet above sea level. The name Zacatecas comes from the Nahuatl
language and means “a place where grass is abundant”.
Mountains, valleys and high plains dominate the landscape
of this state and the capital city of Zacatecas. Definitely
bring some sturdy walking shoes before exploring this splendid
city that features narrow streets and steep callejones (alleyways)
up rocky hillsides.
The
city of Zacatecas greatly reflects it’s Spanish heritage
and the wealth of it’s mineral resources. The principal
industry of this region is mining. Some of the most famous
mines in Mexico and the world are found in Zacatecas. Silver,
copper and many other ores and minerals helped to make Zacatecas
one of the richest cities in New Spain. The silver mine
El Eden offers public tours and features a train ride through
the old mine works. Many of the buildings in Zacatecas display
intricate ironwork and show the remarkable skill of the
artists and craftsman in the area.
