Is Mexico Safe?

We understand that driving to Mexico is not for everyone these days. Mexico has received a lot of negative press over the past few years. We agree that certain parts of Mexico should be avoided right now, but there are also many parts of Mexico that are considered very safe by most travelers. We recommend reading the following two links below if you are considering a road trip to Mexico. Remember, the vast majority of violence and drug related crimes in Mexico occur in areas that tourists do not visit.

The President of Adventure Mexican Insurance Services also took a three week road trip throughout Baja in February 2010 (when violence in Mexico was all over the news), and he never felt threatened or unsafe. It was actually one of the best Baja trips ever because there were less crowds! Read about the trip here >>>

Baja Emergency Hotline for Tourists - Dial 078 - Test your Cell Phone Service Before an Emergency!

In an effort to help tourists in as many ways as possible, the Secretary of Tourism for Baja has set up a quick-dial telephone hotline.

This hotline can be used for the following:

      - Emergency Assistance
      - Trouble with Police or Police misconduct
      - Get driving directions
      - Other general tourist assistance questions

This hotline does work with cell phones, but we recommend testing your cell phone service once you enter the country of Mexico. NOTE: You should contact your US cell phone service provider prior to entering Mexico to get instructions on how to use your cell phone in Mexico. This is always a good idea so you know how to use your cell phone in Mexico in the event of an emergency.

Take precautions to avoid having your vehicle stolen!
Unfortunately, busy tourist weekends can attract some unsavory folks who go on the prowl for easy vehicles to steal. You can significantly lower the risk of having your vehicle stolen by doing the following:
1: Employ a visual anti-theft device such as a steering wheel club. Although these are not 100% fool proof, they will often provide enough deterrent to make the bad guys choose an easier target.
2: Always park within a secure parking lot at night. Any decent hotel or campground should have a fence and 24 hour security for your vehicle.
3: Always park out in open areas where people are present. You want to avoid parking in alleyways or other secluded areas.
