Bring a Vehicle Anti Theft Device to Baja
Although it is not as common as some may think, cars do get stolen in Mexico. Using an anti theft device will help deter auto thieves.
Supposedly, the steering wheel clubs are not very effective against seasoned car thieves. The thieves simply cut through the steering wheel in a matter of seconds and remove the steering wheel club. So the anti theft device that many people recommend is the brake pedal locking system.
Brake Pedal Locking Anti Theft Device
I am not an expert on these brake pedal devices, but I did purchase one for my car before driving to Baja. It cost about $60 at the auto parts store.
It is very easy to use, and you can set it up for your vehicle in less than a minute each time you need to use it.
The Concept
Each time you park your car, you simply grab the brake lock device and stick it under your brake pedal. You then pull the handle, to tighten it. When you return, you simply unlock it with the keys for the device. Refer to the pictures below to get a better idea of how it works.
Supposedly, this device is very difficult for thieves to remove or disable because the brake pedal is metal and so is the device. And the vehicle can not be taken out of park because vehicles require the brake to be pressed before switching out of park.
I can not say if it worked because nobody attempted to steal my car while in Mexico - but anything that will cause a thief to move on to an easier target is a good idea!
