Surfing Baja Malibu - Baja North - Mexico
Baja Malibu can be a world class beachbreak with heaving double overhead barrels, but....
If it were not for the pollution and crime factor, Baja Malibu would be one of the most surfed spots in northern Baja. On big west and combo swells, Baja Malibu can produce epic barrels. It is just south of Tijuana along the toll road - less than 30 minutes drive from the border. The access is easy, and the breaks are consistent throughout the year. Unfortunately, there have been numerous crime incidents at this area including auto thefts and robberies - and many of these incidents have occurred in the paid secure parking areas! The water here is quite polluted, and many surfers have reported getting sick after sessions at Baja Malibu.
Because we are a Mexican auto insurance provider, our job is to advise our customers how to stay out of trouble and avoid having your car stolen. For this reason, we do not recommend surfing at Baja Malibu. There have just been too many unpleasant incidents that have targeted surfers from the the US.
Baja Malibu serves as a great indicator of what the waves will look like further south. Although we recommend getting further south before you pull off the toll road, some surfers enjoy pulling over for a quick look at the conditions while also keeping an eye on their vehicle. Finding Baja Malibu is easy - just exit off the toll road at the 'Baja Malibu' exit sign. If you are going to park, make sure it is in a secure area. Again, remember that cars have been stolen from the 'secure' pay parking lots! If Baja Malibu looks good, remember there will be more great conditions a bit further south where the water is cleaner and the parking is not as sketchy.
