Kitesurfing Mecca - Baja's East Cape
Kitesurfers flock to Baja's East Cape during the winter months of November through March
With southern Baja's pleasant winter temperatures of 70-80 degrees and steady winds, the East Cape area is becoming a favorite place for wind sports enthusiasts to spend their winters. Kiteboarding, also called kitesurfing, is quickly becoming an international favorite wind sport, and the East Cape is one the world famous spots.
While I stopped in at Los Barriles, there were a lot more kitesurfers in the water than windsurfers. It looked fun, so I wandered over to a palapa on the beach that appeared to be renting kitesurfing equipment. It turns out, kitesurfing is a lot more complicated than it looks - because I was informed that I needed to prove my skills or take an eight hour instruction course before they would rent me any gear. If I had more time, I would have taken the class - cause it looks like a lot of fun!
The main kitesurfing school and rental outfit in Los Barriles appears to be Exotikite. They seemed to run a respectable shop in town and they had a palapa on the beach. All customers looked happy, satisfied, and stoked!
