Before Leaving on a Baja Road Trip - Always Get Your Vehicle Tuned Up and Checked Out

Baja and mainland Mexico road conditions can be very tough on your vehicle. Many parts of Baja are also extremely remote, so you want to make sure your vehicle is in tip top running condition before you leave on your trip. You do not want car trouble while on vacation in a foreign country.

At a minimum, you should have the following mechanical procedures done within a week before leaving for Mexico

• Oil change
• During oil change, have the mechanic check all fluids, filters, etc.
• Check tires and have them rotated if necessary
• If you are close to a scheduled maintenance interval for your vehicle, have them do it now.

Travel Tip - Get the Maintenance Done a Few Days Before You Leave on Your Trip

Because there is always a possibility that the mechanic could screw something up, it is suggested that you get the tune up done a few days before your departure date for Mexico. This way you can drive your vehicle for a few days in your home town before leaving for Mexico. This will ensure that everything is running properly before you take off on your trip.

Spare Tires

Almost all vehicles come with a spare tire. But many automobiles only have a mini-spare tire that is only good for 100 miles or so. If you like to plan for worst case scenarios, you may want to consider purchasing a full sized spare tire for your vehicle and bringing it with you to Mexico. Mexico repair shops may not carry all tire sizes, so bringing your own spare tire could save you days of waiting for your specific tire size to be shipped to you in Mexico!
