Bring Copies of Your Vehicle Registration and Ownership Papers with You

When driving your vehicle to Mexico, make sure to bring a few photocopies and the original vehicle registration paperwork with you.

Most people do carry a copy of their vehicle registration in the glove compartment of their vehicle (you are supposed to have this paperwork in the vehicle while driving in the US). But you want to also make a few photocopies of your vehicle registration and carry them in your wallet or other location outside of your vehicle as well while traveling in Mexico.

If you vehicle is stolen or impounded, you may need to show a copy of the vehicle registration in order to file police reports. If your vehicle is impounded for any reason, the Mexican authorities may not release your vehicle to you if you can not show them proof of ownership with a copy of the registration.

If you have the title to your vehicle, you should also bring photocopies of the title as well (you do not need to bring the original).

Just a few minutes worth of photocopying your important paperwork can save you hours and hours of frustrating headaches in the event of an emergency or other logistical hiccup. Make sure to keep at least one set of these copies OUTSIDE of your vehicle in case your vehicle goes adios! Please read this page which explains this concept in further detail.
